  • 来自网友【Solitude】的评论If say, you are deeply touched by heroism, individualism and dynamic patriotism in Saving Private Ryon, stunned by brutal war reality, mental deterioration and solid comradeship depicted in Quiet on the Western Front, watching Generation Kill may give you totally unfamiliar feelings—neutral, not very emotive, or even a little dull. It has disillusioned people’s cognition of war, which is either fierce and passionate or cruel and depressive. Instead, it has manifested the reality of modern warfare in various dimensions, with its core to be the combination of humanism and indifference, and has left you contemplate in some resonate but insoluble propositions . Soldiers are entitled to kill, in other sense, they are obliged to slaughter. War allows people involved to disclose their natural bloody instinct without being sentenced by laws. However, moral scruples are still at work. When Trombly directed his first shot to civilians and a camel, he was filled with exhilaration and pride. Nobody criticized his attack to civilians at that time because R.O.E. (The Rules of Engagement) permitted. However, the situation soon twisted. He suffered from self-blame and a short period of estrangement from comrades after a miserable mother took the victim—a seriously injured young child—to them kneeling for help. Trombly actually made no mistakes in the war, nevertheless, awakened humanism in the wake of a fierce combat inflicted on every soldier’s conscience. Human beings are a species of complexities. They can both be angels and villains, once bystanders and later critics, depending on changeable circumstances and their flashy thoughts. As the plot went on, the same situation repeatedly happened on different soldiers, and similar response replayed again and again, until soldiers and us viewers gradually got accustomed to the death of civilians. Maybe that’s the nature of war—among the thirst of killing and the resistance of morals, people finally arrived at the stage of indifference and unbeatable contradiction between good and evil. Stay frosty. Stay confused. Apart from soldiers whose duty is to obey, we can also catch a real glimpse of war commanders. There is a chief commander (a colonel) who pays most attention to glorious results in battlefield in order to flatter “the elite class” while turns a deaf ear to the soldier’s safety and civilian casualties, an incompetent captain who has little knowledge of war strategies as his only pursuit is a medal, individual honor instead of collective victory, and a timid yet ferocious captain who can not be defeated because he has people from above… Definitely, such leaders in the military will only make you feel desperate and strengthless, like a perfect mirror to the reality. Where there are human beings, there is corruption concerned with inefficiency and vanity. At the end of Generation Kill, watching their own documentary, initially soldiers were immersed in the delight of ending the war. Then, as the camera panned to the naked scenes of maimed civilian corpses, people fall silent. One by one, they left the screen, with only the documentary resounding. War is an entangled subject. Humans can’t stop it, can’t resolve it, can only ponder on it perpetually.
